Last week I spent three days meeting with the offices of Senators, Representatives and the White House to express the concerns that are shared by small IT business owners nationwide. I was part of a group of about 30 business owners and representatives of regional technology associations that were recruited by CompTIA and TechVoice to carry this message to Capitol Hill.

We urged our Representatives to join the Congressional Small Business Information Technology Caucus that has been started by Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) and Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) to educate Members of Congress about the issues that concern us. We met Rep. Sanchez and spoke with her as a group about some of these issues.

Regardless of the audience, our message was the same. First, we stressed that a small business is one that has from 1 to maybe 40 or 50 employees and revenue that is no where near the $500 million figure we heard when we asked for the government's definition. We struggle with tax issues - payroll, unemployment and corporate, access to sufficient capital to expand our operations and with finding qualified employees to fill the approximately 450,000 unfilled jobs in our industry.
