Recently I ran across an interesting article about the reliability of notebook computers. According to the article by Jared Newman in the PC World blog, nearly a third of notebook computers will experience a failure within 3 years of purchase. The post cites a study by Squaretrade, a company that sells extended warranties, but also notes that the findings are in line with the results of PC World's survey earlier this year.
Notebook computers are more sophisticated and contain more delicate parts than desktop computers. Because they are intended to be moved, they are subject to stresses that desktops do not experience. My experience is that many are not very careful with their notebook computers, leading to broken hinges, screens and crashed hard drives.
If you are considering purchasing a notebook, you should read the survey results before buying.
