You might be wondering how on earth a solid backup strategy will save you money. And if you don't ever have a failure it certainly won't appear to be money well spent.
But I have heard it said that there are two types of computer users - those who have had a hard drive crash and those who haven't - yet. The fact is that hard drives do fail and it is important that you are prepared when it happens to you.
There are many backup solutions available today. The most popular solutions are backups to hard drives that can be taken offsite or solutions that backup your data and send it offsite through the internet to a secure data center. Some of these solutions also have the ability to virtualize a failed server while you are waiting for repairs, reducing or even eliminating costly downtime.
If the computer support company you are interviewing or working with is still recommending that you backup to tape, you need to fire them immediately and find a company that is familiar with more reliable backup solutions. Tape is the least reliable back solution available today.
