I just ran across this article on Computer World's site that has inspired a rare short weekend blog post. (Yes, short and weekend are both rare!)
Apparently the purveyors of the rogue antivirus program, Live PC Care, have taken steps to appear legitimate by offering on line support via live chat. And they aren't the first company to have tried this tactic.
Judging from the number of computers in our repair area that have become infected with this type of software, there is no shortage of people who fall for tactics such as these. Some stop short of supplying credit card information, while others have paid the companies that provide these harmful programs. If you have fallen victim to this scheme, I recommend that you cancel your credit card immediately.
Although this year long and not diminishing rash of this type of program is keeping us busy in our repair area, please read this article and be wary of anything that just pops up claiming to be able to protect, clean up or speed up your computer. Pop ups are almost never legitimate!
