I am just home from the Spring Intel Channel Conference, where the recent Atom processor announcement was one of the hot topics. Today I learned that this technology is not just for low end notebooks or 'netbooks', there is also a desktop version and another new term 'nettops'.
Although some in the room were less than excited about this announcement, I find it very intriguing and have already proposed it as a solution to one of our clients. (I did that from my phone before I even left the conference! That's how excited I am about this!)
This product is being targeted for very specialized uses. Digital signage is one potential application, or perhaps a small computer in your kitchen that streams audio and video, and lets you browse to a new recipe! Maybe your grandmother just wants to access the Internet and get her email. If she could do that for about $200, plus a monitor, it would be a lot more affordable.
Imagine a science center or museum that wants to provide the ability for their guests to get more information about a particular exhibit. If the low cost means that they could provide twice as many Internet Information Stations - wouldn't that be great!
I'll be building and testing one of these soon, so look for an update in the next few weeks.
