Yesterday I had the opportunity to stop by Impression 5 Science Center right here in Lansing, Michigan to observe the Advanced Robotics summer science camp. This group - large group - of 9 to 12 year olds were busy programming their robots to navigate a maze using their light sensors.
While the director, Erik Larson, was explaining the challenge to me, a 12 year old girl stood up from the maze and elaborated on his explanation. I learned how the light sensor tells the white surface from the black tape from the green tape. She articulately explained why her team had chosen to mount the light sensor on the side of the robot and point out the path that her team hoped their robot would take.
She went on to describe the idea that they would be implementing during the afternoon when the Sumo challenge would start. For this competition, they would need to protect the front of their robot and they thought that a ramp would be exactly what they needed.
Unfortunately, I couldn't just take the day off and watch the fun, although I was tempted! Although I was in Lansing, I was reminded of similar competitions I have seen on TV, undertaken by much older students at much more prestigious institutions.
I was so excited to see these young people excited about technology! This young lady in particular impressed me with her knowledge, initiative and ability to communicate. I am certain that if her interest in technology is allowed to continue to develop, she can become a technology leader some day. I wanted to take her aside and tell her that the sky is the limit for her.
Although what I do has nothing to do with robotics, as a woman in a traditionally male field, I instantly felt a bond with her. I know I will think of her often and wonder if she is pursuing her dreams. With the assistance of the great programs at Impression 5, many young people can have this same experience.
Maybe next year I will take the day off and join in the fun!
